Jackson County Teachers: True Professionals
The Woodville Faculty

Jackson County teachers are constantly striving to gain more knowledge and sharpen their skills.  In fact, 57% of the district's teachers have earned Master's Degrees, and an additional 8% have earned Educational Specialist's Degrees above the Master's Level.  One percent of the certified personnel have earned a Doctorate. Even after completing demanding degrees, teachers continue to learn.  Each year, all teachers participate in professional development aimed at improving student achievement or maintaining safe and orderly schools.  During the 2006-2007 school year, these professional development programs include topics such as Integrating Technology Into the Curriculum, Reading Comprehension Strategies That Work for Secondary Students, Literacy Centers, Physical Education Activities, Creative Assignments in American History and Social Studies, and Visual Arts in the Elementary Classroom.  In addition to the professional development provided by the Jackson County School District, teachers participate in a variety of programs provided by the state.  One of the most intensive professional development programs for elementary teachers is the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI).  As they begin the program, teachers of kindergarten through third grade complete a full week of training in the summer and attend monthly and sometimes weekly sessions through the school year.  Following the first, comprehensive year of professional development, teachers continue to participate in ARI workshops to ensure that the program is successful.  Many teachers at all grade levels participate in professional development throught the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative, a long term professional development commitment similar to the Alabama Reading Initiative (AMSTI).  Jackson County teachers understand that professional growth is an important factor in helping all students achieve and succeed.
